As a parent or educator in the United States, the news that former President Trump and former Vice President Pence are expected to appear at the National Rifle Association’s annual leadership summit in Indianapolis should be deeply concerning. This is because the leaders who once held the highest offices in the country not only supported the ownership and sale of firearms as an unrestricted right during their term in office, but they also continue to promote and gather support from those opposing regulations that could reduce the overall numbers of deaths and injuries from firearms.
This year started off with a tragic mass shooting in Monterey Park, California, on January 21st, which left 12 dead and 9 injured.
According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there were a total of 84,709 firearm-related deaths among minors in the United States between 2003 and 2022. The widespread availability of firearms in the US is deadly for all, especially for children. Young children are particularly vulnerable due to their smaller size and less-developed bones, muscles, and organs. Additionally, young children are at a higher risk of accidental shootings because they may not understand the danger posed by firearms and are more likely to play with them if they are not properly stored.
In my previous post “Unseen Scars: Understanding and Supporting Children's Mental Health after Mass Shootings”,
I discussed the long-term psychological effects of mass shootings on children. These impacts can include anxiety, PTSD, grief and loss, depression, and behavioral changes like aggression or withdrawal. Children may worry about their own safety or the possibility of another shooting, and prolonged exposure to news coverage can contribute to feelings of helplessness and sadness.
Grim Synchronicity, the NRA summit and a spate of mass shootings
While the National Rifle Association’s annual leadership summit in Indianapolis was taking place from April 14th to 16th, 2023, with former President Trump and former Vice President Pence expected to speak, the nation was facing a surge of mass shootings. This tragic and ironic series of events highlights the urgent need for a comprehensive discussion on gun control and the impact of such violence on our communities, especially our children.
On April 14th, the same day as Trump's speech, a mass shooting occurred in Kansas City, Missouri. One person was killed, and four were injured at a gas station. This was followed by a series of shootings on April 15th, taking place in various locations across the United States.
In Dadeville, Alabama, a devastating mass shooting occurred during a 16th birthday party at the Mahogany Masterpiece Dance Studio. An argument escalated, resulting in four deaths and 32 injuries. This heartbreaking incident underscores the need for better measures to protect children and young people from gun violence.
On the same day, Louisville, Kentucky, experienced another mass shooting, with two people killed and four injured at Chickasaw Park. Meanwhile, in Los Angeles, California, one man was killed, and three others were injured outside an ice cream shop in the Northridge neighborhood. Lastly, in Detroit, Michigan, one person was killed and three more were injured in Downtown Detroit.
The violence did not end there. On April 16th, in Māili, Hawaii, two people were killed and three others injured at an illegal cockfight. This event resulted in two arrests. In Biloxi, Mississippi, five people were injured, including a police officer, near a Surf Style store on U.S. 90.
These tragic events occurred during the National Rifle Association’s annual leadership summit, which was attended by former President Trump and former Vice President Pence. The timing of these mass shootings serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for stronger gun control measures and the necessity to address the issue of gun violence in our country.
As parents and educators, it is our responsibility to take action and advocate for the safety of our children and communities. The presence of Trump and Pence at the NRA summit, coupled with their support for the organization, signals that the fight for gun control will be an uphill battle. However, it is a battle worth fighting.
The sheer number of mass shootings that took place during the NRA summit emphasizes that this is not an isolated issue. It is an ongoing crisis that requires immediate action. We must come together to support policies and initiatives that protect our children and communities from the devastating consequences of gun violence. We must also educate ourselves and others about the facts surrounding gun control and engage in open, respectful conversations about how we can create a safer future for all.
"The only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun."
- Wayne LaPierre, Former Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer of the National Rifle Association
In 2014, NRA contributions totaled $103 million, and Wayne LaPierre's compensation was $985,885. In 2015, contributions dropped to $95 million, but LaPierre's total annual compensation increased to $5,110,985 due to a mandatory $3.7 million deferred compensation distribution. In August 2020, New York Attorney General Letitia James filed a civil lawsuit against the NRA and LaPierre, along with other executives, alleging fraud, financial misconduct, and misuse of charitable funds. The lawsuit sought the dissolution of the NRA due to fraudulent management, but this claim was denied by New York Supreme Court Justice Joel Cohen in March 2022, allowing the case against LaPierre and the organization to proceed. LaPierre's extravagant personal spending, such as luxury suits and chartered jet flights, garnered attention during the legal proceedings.
Despite evidence that stricter gun control measures can reduce the frequency and severity of mass shootings, there remains significant disagreement among Americans on the issue. While some advocate for tighter gun control measures, others strongly believe in the importance of protecting gun ownership rights. Many Americans believe that gun control measures will have little-to-no effect on reducing the number of mass shootings, likely due to this underlying commitment to gun ownership rights.
In light of the Trump and Pence support for the NRA, it is essential for parents and educators to be aware of the potential ramifications of their support, as it can directly influence the policies and regulations surrounding gun control in the United States. As parents and educators, we must remain vigilant and informed about the issue of gun violence and its impact on our children's lives.
In the following sections, we will explore the different ways that parents and educators can help protect children from the dangers of gun violence, as well as promote a culture of safety and awareness around firearms.
Educate Yourself and Your Children
One of the most important steps to take as a parent or educator is to educate yourself about the dangers of gun violence and the responsible use of firearms. This includes learning about the different types of firearms, their potential for harm, and the laws and regulations surrounding their use. Share this knowledge with your children, teaching them about the risks associated with firearms and the importance of treating them with caution and respect.
Advocate for Stricter Gun Control Measures
As concerned parents and educators, it's crucial to advocate for stricter gun control measures that can help reduce the risk of gun violence affecting our children. This may involve contacting your local and state representatives, attending town hall meetings, or joining local gun control advocacy groups. By lending your voice to the cause, you can help push for legislation that prioritizes the safety of our children and communities.
Promote a Culture of Safety and Awareness
Encourage a culture of safety and awareness around firearms by discussing the topic openly with your children and students. Explain the importance of responsible gun ownership, proper storage, and safe handling. Encourage your children to ask questions and express their concerns about gun violence, and engage in open, honest conversations that foster understanding and awareness.
Support Mental Health Initiatives
Many instances of gun violence are linked to mental health issues. As parents and educators, supporting mental health initiatives can play a significant role in preventing gun violence. This may involve advocating for increased mental health resources in schools, promoting mental health awareness, or providing support for children and families struggling with mental health challenges.
Teach Conflict Resolution Skills
Teaching children how to effectively resolve conflicts without resorting to violence is an essential skill that can help reduce the risk of gun violence. Encourage open communication, active listening, empathy, and problem-solving as ways to address conflicts in a non-violent manner.
Be Prepared and Create a Safety Plan
In the unfortunate event of a gun-related incident, being prepared can make all the difference. Develop a safety plan for your home and discuss it with your family, ensuring that everyone knows what to do in case of an emergency. If you are an educator, familiarize yourself with your school's safety protocols and procedures, and be prepared to guide your students through them if necessary.
By taking these steps, parents and educators can play a critical role in protecting children from the dangers of gun violence and fostering a safer, more secure environment. It's essential that we continue to address the issue of gun violence and its impact on our children, and not allow the support of former President Trump and former Vice President Pence for the NRA to deter us from fighting for the safety and well-being of our children.

To do so, we must work together to raise awareness about the dangers of gun violence, promote responsible gun ownership, and advocate for common-sense gun control measures that can save lives. This includes supporting initiatives such as universal background checks, closing loopholes in existing gun laws, and imposing stricter regulations on high-capacity firearms.
We must also prioritize mental health support and education in our schools and communities, equipping children and adolescents with the tools they need to navigate the complex emotional landscape of today's world. By fostering resilience, empathy, and emotional intelligence in our youth, we can help to create a generation of responsible, compassionate individuals who will work towards a safer, more inclusive society.
In the face of adversity, it is crucial that we maintain hope and optimism. Change is possible, but it requires perseverance and collective action. By engaging with our communities, participating in grassroots initiatives, and fostering open dialogue, we can work towards a brighter future for our children and for generations to come.
As we reflect on the tragic events that unfolded during the NRA summit, let us remember the countless lives that have been lost or irrevocably altered by gun violence. We owe it to them, and to ourselves, to fight for a better, safer world – a world in which our children can grow up free from the shadow of fear.
To bring about this change, we must stand united in our commitment to the safety and well-being of our children. We must educate ourselves, engage in meaningful conversations, and take action to advocate for the changes we wish to see.
